What’s NEW at The Goat Shed in 2023?

Can you believe we’re a week into 2023 already!! Where does time go!

A very Happy New Year to you all, I very much hope you all had a fantastic Christmas, spent with family and friends and of course lots of delicious food and drink, let’s face it, that’s what Christmas is all about!

I’ve come to realise very quickly in this industry that Christmas is extended for quite some time, in fact Christmas at The Goat Shed began at the end of October and had been in the planning stages since the Summer, so there’s a little relief in not hearing Christmas tunes every time I walk into the shop now!

Jokes aside, the team and I want to thank you again for supporting us and choosing to shop local this Christmas, it makes a huge difference to our community being able to support local producers and independents, so a big thank you!

What’s new at The Goat Shed in 2023, I hear you ask?!!

What’s in Season?

This month it’s all about root vegetables, swede, parsnip, turnip, carrots, beetroot, etc, plus lots of lovely leafy greens like cabbage and kale, perfect for hearty slow cooked meals. We have lots of fantastic vegetables available in the shop, plus don’t forget the new cheese room & deli for any extras you might need. This year we hope to expand our fresh produce section…watch this space!!

January is slow cooking month, so time to dust off the slow cooker and experiment with some local ingredients; here’s a quick recipe to get you started:

Slow Cooker Beef Casserole

· 500g/1lb 2oz braising steak

· 150ml/5fl oz red wine

· 3 garlic cloves

· 2 medium onions, sliced

· 1 strip orange peel

· 1 bay leaf

· 1 tsp olive oil

· 100g/3½oz smoked bacon lardons

· 2 carrots, sliced

· handful black olives

· salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method:

1.            Put the beef into a large bowl with the red wine, peeled garlic cloves, sliced onions, orange peel and bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper and give it all a stir. Cover the bowl with cling film and refrigerate for 30 minutes or overnight if cooking in the morning.

2.            In the morning, add the olive oil to the bottom of the slow cooker with the bacon lardons. Tip half the beef and its marinade into the slow cooker. Add in the carrots, then tip the rest of the beef on top. Put the lid on the slow cooker and cook on high for 8-10 hours.

3.            When ready to serve, stir in the chopped parsley and black olives. Serve the casserole with creamy mash or rice.

I would highly recommend a bottle of red from the Winbirri vineyard, based locally in Surlingham; Winbirri Vineyard

Keeping on the subject of food The Kitchen team are launching a few new dishes on the main menu today including;

· BLT – Swannington smoked streaky bacon, slow roast tomato and lettuce

· Honey roast fig, Wensum white, walnut and parsley Open Sandwich

· Quinoa salad with avocado, cucumber, watercress and a yoghurt dressing

· Greek Salad, hummus, tomato, cucumber and lettuce sandwich

I have also seen our clever Barista’s Geoff & Enya making up a Toffee Apple Crumble Latte and a Chocolate Brownie Hot Chocolate…..we can’t wait to hear what you think of these new additions!

2023 promises to be an exciting year at The Goat Shed, if the last couple of years are anything to go by you’ll know we don’t fear change, in fact quite the opposite, so hold on tight and I know with your continued support, comments, likes and ideas we can make 2023 the best year yet!!
